Bloggers and business owners who want to keep track of their website performance and gain actionable insights enabling you to grow your traffic. Semrush is an essential tool which I have been paying for months and as paid for itself ten folds. In other words, if you just want a solution where you can jump in, find high traffic keywords with low competition, plugin in your competitors URL and be done with it in a matter of minutes, SEMrush is the alternative for you.

When you signup to SEMrush you have the option to request a demo for free. There is also an in-depth documentation at hand if you ever get stuck. However, the UI is user-friendly and will be categorized to help you quickly access relevant information.

Overall, I was able to jump right in and use SEMrush without going to the docs. Everything is intuitive and easily accessible. SEMrush vs. everything else looks quite good at this point.

If you are running a business that relies on local customers, chances are you will want to try Moz. They offer a few software, but I would say they are most useful for a local business like a Pizza shop and so. Again Moz Pro provides a lot more tools which we will get into further in this review. They recently launch a keyword explorer tool which I am having a lot of fun with as it helps reduce time spent on keyword research.

Based on the plan: $99, $149, $249, $599 (per month).

Go to Moz

  • Track your website ranking
  • Search visibility score
  • Local ranking base on national, city, and neighborhood levels.
  • Keyword Research with suggestions and flitters
  • Track links to your website or a competitor
  • Spam analysis to avoid penalties
  • Website audit with recommended fixes.
  • On page optimization suggestions
  • Custom report with overview of your site performance

  • You get access to the Moz Academy which as a few useful videos (they are all great however a lot is beginner level)
  • Active Forum to ask SEO related questions
  • And finally for me is you get access to keyword explorer.
  • A must have tool if you run a base local business

  • Slightly over priced and hyped for what it is.
  • The on page suggestion is very generic when compared to SEMrush or Alexa

Small businesses owners and enterprise companies. I pay for this to get access to the keyword explorer so that I can track the consistency across the different tools I use for smarter decision making. I will put my hand up and say that I don’t use much of the features. Moz could be an alternative for you.

They software is pretty straight forward to use, and you get lots of in-depth documentations and tutorials to help you get started. Acess to the Moz Academy is worth the entry price alone.

Overall, I would say if you are a local business Moz all the way otherwise SEMrush. However, if money is not an issue for you, then I would say sign up to Moz and you can use it conjunction with some of the other tools mentioned here to make smarter marketing moves.

This is another great tool to consider my experience with this tool so far as been pleasant the only thing I will say is it only offers data for US and UK. The data SpyFu holds on on keywords, and a website backlink profile seems to be less on the domain and keywords I have tested. With this tool, you can quick get valuable insights on what your competitor’s marketing strategy is. SpyFu offers well present downloadable reports for you or your client for that reason I can see it working great with marketing agencies.

Based on the plan: $79, $99, $299 (per month).

Go to SpyFu

  • SEO research your competitors top performing keywords
  • See competitors ranking history
  • Research a Domains backlink profile
  • PPC research competitors ad spend
  • PPC research competitors ad keywords
  • PPC research competitors ad history
  • Adwords Advisor tool to help optimize your ads
  • SERP analysis
  • Backlinks outreach

  • The AdWords history is compelling in the sense that you can easily see what’s worked for your competitor.
  • The custom report is perfect to present to your team or client.
  • They offer a unique feature that shows competitor shared keywords and keyword the competition doesn’t rank for.

  • It is limited to US and UK, but if that’s your target market, it will be perfect for you.
  • The on page suggestion is very generic when compared to SEMrush or Alexa

I can see this tool working ideal for small to large business and bloggers wanting to advance their marketing efforts further. If you run an SEO agency, then SpyFu could be an alternative for you.

It can be overwhelming to start with but after a while, you will start to understand where everything is. I love the report and I I am outsourcing a particular job I create a report to future illustrate my mission.

Overall, I would recommend this tool if it fits within your target audience demographics.

When it comes to checking backlinks, there’s only one tool that comes to mind and that’s Ahrefs.  Which is probably hands down the best tool out there for backlink research as the amount of data they provide usually match my Google webmaster backlink results and also shows a few extras.  This is a powerful tool to quickly on cover your competitors backlinking strategy to see what’s working best for them so you can do the same if not better. They have a Content Explorer to want so to learn what content is working well in your niche than can easily be uncovered also. Of Course, it wouldn’t be a complete SEO tool if it did not allow you to track your position ranking, Ahrefs when one step further and allows you to set up custom alerts and things as such as brand mentions or position changes.

Based on the plan: $99, $179, $399, $999 (per month).

ahrefs-pricingGo to Ahrefs

  • Ahrefs is said to be the best backlink checker tool in the industry thanks to the massive amount of links they have indexed with live updates
  •  Content explorer to uncover popular topics within your niche
  •  Keyword Explorer which allows you to feel such an order and rearrange the results volume keyword is difficult is the number of phrases and son.
  •  Check keywords for your website is currently ranking for in various countries and different languages.
  •  Run crawl report to see if there any issues that could be hurting your side the visibility in the search engines.
  •  You are also able to send yourself custom weekly or monthly reports and how well your SEO efforts it’s going.

  • In my opinion the best backlink checker on the market with accurate link data.
  • Allows you to discover where you can obtain links quickly.
  • See Backlinks history recently gained and lost

  • The Keyword Explorer does what it says on the tin, but MOZ and SEMrush are better in my opinion.

This tool is a most have for bloggers and business owners to monitor your backlink profile.  Ahrefs can help you quickly identify spammy links pointing to your websites that could hurt your search engine ranking.  And also identify what’s the most linked to content within your niche which gives you an idea what the influences in your space care about.  I use Ahrefs to monitor links pointing to my website and also to help me discover new backlink opportunities.

I recommend Ahrefs to everyone that cares about getting a higher ranking.

It might take you if you log into to get familiar with working component of Ahrefs fully. There’s over 200 different Google ranking signals, and it is well known that backlink carries the most weight. Just do a simple Google search of the phrase “click here”?

Pay close attention to the site that ranks first a quick look at the backlink profile will explain why 🙂

Long Tail Pro

I’ve been using long tail Pro for a few years now, in fact, it is one of the first keyword research tools that I have purchased and still on a copy to this day.  It works it’s fantastic however is way too many bugs and lags. With that being said it’s still a great tool for those of you starting out with a small budget.

Based on the plan: $37, $67, $147 (per month).

Go to Long Tail Pro

  • Check a number of keywords at the same time to pull in search volume
  • Check Keywords competitiveness
  • Analyze top ten search results
  • Check for exact match keyword currently in my opinion one of the major selling points of this software.
  • Check the CPC, great if you are creating Adsense sites.

  • Allows you to find exact match keyword quickly domains
  • Check a keyword phrase competitiveness
  • Export the results for future analyze.

  • Seems outdated when compared to the tools mentioned above.

Perfect for those creating niche sites focus on Adsense optimization.

I recommend Ahrefs to everyone that cares about getting a higher ranking.

Long-tailed pros relatively easy to use however during the initial setup process some users might find it difficult to plug in their Adwords Credentials. In the past, you also had to input your Moz API key thankful LTP as moved away from them to streamline this process. Thankfully there’s lots of documentation and as support at hand to help you if you ever get stuck.

The winner?

For me,  after using all these tools for months if not years, SEMrush hands down the most overall performer perfect for all levels of users. The run free webinars training, Moz does a similar thing but there’s is paid.

The main advantage is the provide actionable insights and training to help you step up your marketing game.

Each has these tools have their place together in your marketing campaign hence why I pay and use all of them to grow my website. So if I could just choose one it would have to be SEMrush, runners ups would be Alexa, Ahrefs, Moz then Long Tail Pro.

By the way, do you have any first-hand experience with any of these SEO tools? Feel free to share.

      Hey Aya,

Great recommendation I have checked out Serpstats and the result it is bringing back is very similar to SEMrush and Spyfu. I guess that is a good thing as both those tools I mentioned are super accurate.
