Is GIMP A Poor Alternative To Photoshop?
Few of us reckon GIMP (an open source and free Image editing tool) as a true replacement for Adobe Photoshop. Well, it’s not really the case may be and nor GIMP is claiming this either. What is GIMP? In the lines below, we describe it for convenience of all those who doesn’t know much about this valuable software’s scope of work, at least for immature designers.
What GIMP says about itself: GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.
In our today’s article for, we are going to evaluate how GIMP is actually an alternative to Photoshop and whether it is a good alternative or not.
Reasons why you shouldn’t compare it with Photoshop
With the fact that GIMP is the default editor of numerous admired Linux users in the absence of Photoshop access to Linux users, they consider GIMP as their best Photoshop alternative, and to an extent rightly so!
Also consider the fact that Photoshop is a well-established and heavily invested program that covers all the possible technicalities while doing a professional job as compared to GIMP, a just born kid in contrast, it needs to learn a lot.
Photoshop in similar age what GIMP is now has already established itself as a well-accepted professional tool while GIMP still stands somewhere a yard short of this desired status. Photoshop meant for professional work, it offers a load of features to its users, all of its competitors lacking greatly in this region of facilities.
GIMP, a free online tool, concentrates mainly on Community-Centric Model. Off course it has a circle of users but it lacks customers and patrons instead. Photoshop on the other hand is a giant of the field in contrast to GIMP, which has yet to travel a lot to stand side by side with Adobe Photoshop. Additionally, GIMP lacks in Program B’s future updates area as well. So, for all these valid reasons we can say that GIMP is a poor alternative to Adobe’s Photoshop.
Key Differences between Adobe Photoshop and GIMP
How do you convince a Photoshop user to turn towards the GIMP for all of image tweaking? This question often surfaces at Linux platform even. The key difference between both the software’s is price; GIMP is totally free of cost software. You can donate whatever amount you want to donate to it, but surely not need to pay for its technical use while Adobe Photoshop needs price for all its fantastic features. Well, like they say, good things comes at a price!
Still, GIMP is a best available option for immature designers and for nonprofessional works by ordinary users. Photoshop costs you around $642.58 at Amazon.com and $19.99/per month through Adobe Creative Cloud; this is quite a heavy cost for a beginner by all standards.
Due to lack of lots of features, GIMP occupy less RAM and Disk space along with lesser hardware resources, in contrast to heavily loaded Adobe Photoshop. You can use GIMP on most OS’s, while Adobe Photoshop is not yet introduced to Linux users. Therefore, these were some of the key differences between Adobe’s masterpiece and GIMP which may or may not convince a user to re-think about his/her choice of photo editing software.
As we described earlier that Adobe Photoshop is heavily loaded with technical features in contrast to GIMP, so quality of work while working on Photoshop is far better than one gets from working on GIMP, where there are some minor bugs also yet to be solved as well.
If someone needs to move to GIMP from Photoshop, one can do this by GIMPshop. However, it needs to use a Photoshop-like interface as GIMP yet to extend this facility to Linux users too.
